So, you may have heard the buzz going around about Instagram SEO lately. 🐝
Maybe you heard that Instagram posts can now show up in Google search results.
Or maybe you’ve seen creators talking about using keywords in place of hashtags.
If you’re still wondering what Instagram SEO actually is and how it can work for you, you’ve landed in the right place!
Instagram SEO is a way to help the platform understand your content so it knows who exactly to show it to.
That means your content can show up in Instagram search, the Explore page, recommended posts, and even Google – basically anywhere people are already looking for what you do.
And then, because your content starts landing in front of the right people waaaay more easily, getting those new followers to turn into amazing new clients becomes a heck of a lot easier.
In this post, I’ll be breaking down EXACTLY what Instagram SEO is, what to do with the hashtags we all once relied on, and how to start using it in your own content strategy.
When you think of a search engine, you probably think of Google, right?
But Google is NOT the only place where people are searching for information anymore.
Platforms like YouTube and Pinterest have worked like search engines for years. And now, Instagram has joined the club.
In fact, 40% of Gen Z users actually prefer searching on Instagram instead of Google, and 62.4% of users use Instagram to follow and research brands or products they’re interested in. *
So, while Instagram might not look like the traditional search engine we’re come to expect, TONS of people are actively using it to find businesses and services.
Searches like “interior designer in New York” “Showit website designer,” or “Toronto wedding photographer” happen every day.
The days of scrolling Instagram just to see what your friends are up to have completely gone out the window.
Now, they’re also searching for answers, inspiration, and professionals they might want to hire.
Which means, as a business owner on Instagram, your content has even MORE potential to show up right when someone is looking for what you offer.
Now, you might be wondering… well, what about hashtags though? Are hashtags dead?
100% – They are cold and rotting away into dust underground as we speak.
RIP Hashtags. You did your job well. 🪦
Okay so I’m being a TAD dramatic. There’s actually a bit of nuance here to consider.
With the introduction of Instagram SEO, hashtags are not as relevant as they once were.
For years, hashtags acted like chapter titles of a book. They were how we told Instagram what our content was about. We’d have them all stacked at the end of a caption or in a comment like:
#WomenOwnedBusiness #InstagramSEO #ContentStrategy
Some creators would even add about 27 more hashtags because Instagram capped your hashtag count at 30.
But, with the rollout of Instagram SEO, Instagram announced you can only have a maximum of FIVE (just 5!!!) hashtags on your post. It even gives you a little alert if you try to add more than that.
Even the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has said:
“Contrary to popular belief, hashtags are NOT a way to get more reach. They’re a great way to let people know what your post is about and connect posts. […] They’re useful for things like search, but generally speaking, no, hashtags do not improve your reach.”
So, long story short: Sayonara, Hashtags!
Now that Instagram’s algorithm is getting smarter and smarter, it doesn’t need hashtags to understand what your post is about.
Instead, it’s using SEO.
It KNOWS what’s happening in your post because it reads what you’re saying, what you’re writing, and what you’re talking about in the comments.
You might have even noticed a small blue magnifying glass popping up over your comments with a suggested search topic.
(Side note: This feature is not rolled out to everyone just yet. If you can’t find it, don’t worry. Your eyeballs are working fine. The feature just hasn’t been added to your account yet.)
This is a sign that Instagram is using SEO to try to guess what your post is about.
Truth be told, it’s not always 100% accurate. BUT it shows that the platform is making huuuuge strides towards a much more intelligent algorithm that relies on Instagram SEO.

Recently, someone slid into my comment section on Instagram and said the most beautiful thing:
“I found this post through a Google search.”
I had created a quick reel to explain where Instagram had moved scheduled posts to. The platform had updated, and scheduled posts were no longer where they usually were.
I knew people were going to be STRESSED about this.
So, I made a quick reel that explained where they’d moved to. And when people started asking Google that question, my reel was popping up as an answer. That comment was the most delicious proof of it.
My first thought was “Yesssss!! It’s FINALLY working!! Instagram SEO is alive and well!!”
This was soooo exciting because for the longest time, Instagram was a closed platform. That meant big search engines like Google couldn’t recommend Instagram content to people searching for things.
But in July 2025, Instagram announced that would be changing.
Now, if you’re over 18 and have a public creator or business account, Google is indexing Instagram posts. This means your content can FINALLY show up in Google searches when someone asks a question.
And that’s where it becomes important to put Instagram SEO to work.

Since hashtags have long been left behind, Instagram is now analyzing the content you post for keywords. It’s listening to your reels and reading your captions.
It’s looking at your ACTUAL content – not just your list of hashtags
The clearer your Instagram SEO signals are in your content, the easier it is for the platform AND external search engines to connect your posts with people who are searching for that topic.
Now, not only are you showing up more on people’s Explore pages and Instagram search results, but you’re also showing up in Google searches, too.
So, now that you know that Instagram values keywords over hashtags, the big question becomes:
How can you take advantage of Instagram SEO in your own content?
The good news is you don’t necessarily have to reinvent your entire content strategy. BUT a few small tweaks can go a long way in how easily Instagram understands and shares your posts.
Here are 3 simple ways to optimize your content with Instagram SEO.
To get started with Instagram SEO, the first thing you’ll want to look for is something you’re probably already doing:
Look for the questions people are asking.
What exactly are your ideal clients typing into Google that you can answer for them?
The first thing that comes to mind is probably going to be whatever people pay you for. For example, my clients would ask me, “How do I get clients from Instagram?” and I would answer by telling them all about Magic Marketing Machine and how it could solve the exact problems they’re facing.
But don’t just stop there. There are also smaller, more nuanced questions people might ask. Things like:
“What ring light should I be using for Instagram?”
Or “How do I share social proof on Instagram?”
All of these questions are smaller, but they’re also powerful entry points.
When you create content that answers them, you give Instagram (and Google!) clear signals that this is what your content is about. Then, when someone searches for that question, your post pops up in response.
Now that you have a specific question in mind, the next step is simple:
Repeat that EXACT question in your content itself.
This helps pepper Instagram SEO keywords throughout your content so both Instagram and external search engines know precisely what you’re talking about.
Start with the hook in your reel. Open your video by reiterating the question. For example, if your audience is asking, “How do I calm my reactive dog down?” start your reel with “Here’s exactly how you make your reactive dog calm down.”
Next, moving onto your caption, you’re going to want to repeat the same question yet AGAIN.
“Here are 5 tips for calming your reactive dog down ⬇️”
Remember: Instagram is not relying on hashtags anymore. It’s analyzing your actual content.
By clearly repeating the questions your clients are asking, both Google and Instagram can see that you’re providing the answer. Then, your post will get shared the next time someone asks the same question, too.
There’s another place where you can harness SEO on Instagram: your Instagram bio.
Specifically, pay attention to your name line. This is the line that shows up right under your handle. It’s where many people list their name and what they do.
For example, mine reads:
My handle: Jennaspaige
My name line: Jenna Harding 🇨🇦 Marketing Coach.
Many times business owners use this spot to make up clever titles for themselves. And it’s totally okay to make up a title for yourself! I WANT you to get creative!
Just maybe not in your name line.
Because if you want to improve your Instagram bio SEO, what you put there should be what people are actually searching for.
Your Instagram bio is a prime spot where search engines are scraping.
So, if you’re a dietician, you may be a “food wizard” but search engines don’t know what that means. If you’re a dog trainer, don’t use “dog whisperer” in your Instagram bio.
Using clear, searchable keywords in your bio helps Google and the platform understand what you do and makes it easier for the right people to find you.

For service-based businesses, Instagram SEO opens the door to a LOT more visibility.
Most creators were taught that an Instagram post would only last about 72 hours – maybe a week if you were lucky. Then it would mostly disappear from the feed.
But with the shift away from hashtags and toward SEO, I’ve been seeing more and more posts lasting WAY longer.
Now, whenever I see the notification that says, ‘So-and-So followed you from your reel!” I make it a habit to click the notification to see exactly which reel So-and-So followed me from.
Because it could have been the reel I posted yesterday or a reel I posted months ago.
That never used to be a thing.
Instagram SEO has completely changed how people are finding content.
With Instagram SEO taking the reins, your posts can show up in Instagram search results, on the Explore page, and in Google searches whenever someone is looking for answers to their burning questions. 🔥
That means a much larger pool of eyeballs finding and reading your content.
AND content that keeps working for you in the background long after you hit ‘publish.’
Instagram SEO is quickly changing how content gets discovered on the platform.
The days of hashtags are long gone and replaced by keywords and an algorithm trained to analyze your ACTUAL content instead.
When you optimize your content and your profile with Instagram SEO, you help Instagram (and Google!) connect your content with the people who are searching for it.
And with your posts easily popping up in Instagram searches, the Explore page, and Google search results, there are even more opportunities for new people to stumble across your content and become your newest die-hard fan. 🤩
