How to Win Over the Instagram Algorithm in 2026

Does it ever feel like Instagram’s algorithm is out to get you?

You spend time planning a post, hit publish, then… nothing.

In this post, I’m breaking down exactly how the Instagram algorithm works and how to optimize your content so it actually gets seen.

How the Instagram Algorithm Works in a Nutshell

First things first – before trying to optimize your content, you need to understand exactly HOW the Instagram algorithm works. 

There are hundreds – if not thousands – of elements that go into making up Instagram’s algorithm. As marketers and business owners, there’s NO WAY we’re going to learn it all!

But even through all of the changes Instagram makes to its algorithm, there’s only one thing that remains certain and unchanged. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: 

Instagram is JUST a computer code. The code’s only job is to read the signals it receives and decide what content is worth showing to other people. 

Here’s how it works:

1. You publish a post. Instagram will show it to some of your followers and some non-followers. 

2. If those people touch their screens or hover over your post for a long period of time, that creates an engagement signal. 

3. This signal will tell Instagram’s algorithm to test this post with another small group of people. 

4. If those new people interact with your post, watch it in full (or at least most of the way through), or do both, the algorithm goes nuts

Engagement signals fly everywhere because now, you’re speaking Instagram’s love language. 😍

5. The algorithm will blast your post and continue to show it to more and more people. 
This is why every social media manager emphasizes the NEED for engagement. The more engagement you get, the more engagement signals go off, and the more the Instagram algorithm distributes your post.

So What Actually Counts as ‘Engagement’ to Instagram’s Algorithm?

Like I mentioned above, engagement is any time the algorithm senses someone “touching” your post.

That includes the obvious stuff like comments, likes, shares, and saves.

But it also includes the less obvious things:

  • Swiping through your carousel
  • Watching your reel
  • REwatching your reels
  • Pausing your stories
  • Even stopping their scroll long enough to read your caption

All of these little micro-actions wave flags to catch the algorithm’s attention and say, “Hey! I’m cool! Share me!”Bottom line? The more of these signals your content sends off, the more people Instagram’s algorithm is probably going to share it to.

5 Ways to Make the Instagram Algorithm Work for You

Growth doesn’t come from merely hoping your posts perform well or crossing your fingers and wishing for the best after you hit publish. 

The Instagram algorithm can (and will!) work for ANYONE once you make a few intentional shifts in how you create, structure, and think about your content.

Here are 5 practical ways to start working with the algorithm instead of feeling like it’s always working against you.

Stop wishing for engagement and take control.

When it comes to Instagram’s algorithm, you can’t just wish for engagement. 

I see this all the time. Business owners hit publish on a post, cross their fingers, and hope for the best.

But just posting and praying isn’t the same as DOING something about it. 

You have to ACTIVELY design your posts to get the engagement you’re wishing for.

In my program Magic Market Machine, I teach what I call engagement attractors. These are the things you need to include in your post to actually get the engagement you’re looking for. 

For example, instead of just hoping someone comments, ask a question in your caption.

Then, instead of just being proud of yourself for receiving a comment, go back and like and respond to that comment. Even better, answer that comment with another question so that the viewer comes back and comments again!

ALL of this counts as engagement! Then, the algorithm is happy and you’re happy that your post is finally getting the attention it deserves. 

Optimize your posts FOR the Instagram Algorithm.

One of the first things I teach in Magic Marketing Machine is that the Instagram algorithm rewards interaction. 

Your posts on Instagram need to be created to be touched and engaged with. Think of it this way…

If you post a single photo on its own, what options do people REALLY have to interact with it? They’ll look at it, admire it for a half a second, then scroll on. 

There’s no reason for them to stay and interact.

A single photo or even a flyer promoting your offer is the least optimized thing you can post.

But what about a reel, that starts with a hook, and then sends you down to read the caption? That speaks the Instagram algorithm’s love language. 😍

A video stops the scroll and hogs the screen in the BEST WAY. 

People automatically pause to watch for 5, 10, 15 seconds instead of glancing at a photo for 0.2 seconds and moving on.

All that watch time = TONS of engagement signals = your post getting pushed to way more people.  

For example, if you’re a photographer, instead of posting just photos of your work, optimize your post by turning it into a reel montage. 

Now, not only are people pausing and watching (and signaling Instagram to share your post even more 🙌🏻), they’re also seeing a mini portfolio of your best work!

Once you understand how to optimize your posts to cater to Instagram’s algorithm, growing your account suddenly feels easier. 

Shake off that lingering negative mindset.

This next tip is a little different, and that’s to pay attention to your mindset.

Now, I know you might hear ‘mindset’ and think it sounds kinda woo, but stay with me here. (Because this actively affects your ability to sign clients.)

Having a stuck negative mindset can quietly sabotage your Instagram success without you even realizing it.  Here’s an example:

Have you ever been afraid of being seen as “stupid” or “less than” others?

A deep-rooted fear like that needs A LOT of unpacking and it affects your content until you do. 

You’ll end up overcompensating just to make sure no one’s reading your posts and laughing at you. 

Your reels will be clips of you wearing a corporate blue blazer using every SAT word imaginable and ALL the fancy marketing jargon.

BUT if your ideal clients are moms trying to make a living with a messy mom bun, a toddler in her lap, and one hand rocking an infant… that ultra professional look is going to fall on deaf ears.

They’re going to scroll right past your content instead of engaging with it. 

Showing up in your content requires vulnerability. To do that, you need to let go of the negative mindset keeping you stuck. 

Let go of the fears and the need for everything to be just right. Instead, let your audience see your true self. 

When you do, your marketing naturally becomes stronger. Your audience stops scrolling when they see something REAL. They watch longer, comment more, and save your posts. And the Instagram algorithm eats that up.

If you find something that works, keep doing it.

Take a look at the content you’ve been posting. 

What’s working? What’s your audience REALLY gravitating toward?

KEEP DOING IT!

If your carousels are performing better than your reels? Post more carousels. 

If your audience prefers shorter video reels vs longer ones? Aim to keep your reels under a minute long. 

Whenever you find something that works, do it again. Instagram’s algorithm already told you what it likes. Your audience did too. Content that interests people and gets them to interact is always going to be a win. 

You can post the most polished, professional video in the world, but if no one watches it, it fizzles out of existence. 

Pay attention to what’s working and build and refine from there.
