One of my clients wrote to me this week: Have I been living under a rock? What is YAPPING? Should I be making Yap Reels? Help!
The energy of her message was very “Oh crap… is yapping another new Instagram trend I’m already behind on?”
Don’t worry; It’s not.
It’s a rebrand of what most of us call “A talking-head reel.” A rebrand that was so successful it allegedly made one creator over a million dollars in under 2 weeks, when she started selling a course on how to do it.
There’s a lot to unpack here. Including how to yap on camera. 💁🏼♀️
In this post, we’re breaking down what yapping on camera actually means, how it’s been rebranded as different from the talking head reels you’ve seen before, and how the success of Jessi Jean’s launch is a sign of the pure potential your business has online.(The short version: I give a quick run down about this whole story in this reel)
| Hi! 👋🏻 I’m Jenna, and I help business owners stop guessing what to post on Instagram and start making fun, fast content that brings in clients, in just a few minutes a day. www.jennaharding.com |
Who is Jessi Jean? To be honest– I don’t know! That’s part of why her sudden success teaching people content creation SHOOKETH the online business world. She came up seemingly out of nowhere and crushed a launch selling tactics social media marketers had already been selling for years. It was fascinating.
Jessi Jean is a binge-eating-coach turned home-reno-influencer turned podcaster turned content creation mentor.
She created a new Instagram account in November of 2025 that quickly exploded to 300k+ followers, who tuned in to hear her talk about her life.
Her charismatic-straight to camera delivery wracked up the views and earned her an audience.
The short story is, her audience asked her how she spoke so well on camera, so she started calling her style of video “Yaps” and promptly invented a 6 week challenge teaching people how to yap on camera just like she does.
In June, 2026, this $297 offer took off like wildfire.
A few days into her launch, she had already made hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Content coaches and online business owners like me got immediate WHIPLASH.
This gal most of us had never heard of was now all anyone was talking about. That discourse presumably then brought Jessi even more attention, closing the launch at $1.2M (not validated intel but you get the idea).
Now, Instagram is flooded with Yap Style Videos – from folks doing the challenge, folks who heard about the challenge, and folks who had been making videos like this literally forever.
Let’s start with the basics.
Yapping on camera is exactly what it sounds like — you, talking directly into your phone, sharing your thoughts, opinions, or expertise in a casual, seemingly unscripted way.
If someone is intentionally using the term “Yapping” to describe content, they often mean they’re using a delivery that’s not performative, preachy, or heavily edited. The vibe of yap-reels feels like a casual Facetime call with grounded energy.
The subject matter doesn’t typically “teach”. Yaps are less how-to tutorial, and more share and spill.
And if you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve probably noticed it’s EVERYWHERE. 👀
Creators are hopping on camera and just… talking. Sometimes for 30 seconds. Sometimes for 3 minutes. They’re sharing hot takes, breaking down strategies, telling stories, and doing it all without polished or ‘perfect-looking’ production.
So why is everyone suddenly yapping, specifically?
Here’s the thing — it’s not actually sudden.
“Talking head videos” have been around since Music.ly turned into TikTok. What’s new is Jessi Jean gave it a rebrand: A new name, a formula and an inspiring success story.
Then she bottled it into something highly marketable.
I’ve got 3 theories as to why the masses flocked to this launch:
But “Yapping on camera” comes across as casual, authentic connection.
What once felt like something that took a lot of effort, was repositioned as something akin to sending a voice memo to a friend. Easy = Accessible.
And THAT is why this style is all over your feed right now.
Now, I know what you might be thinking…
But Jenna, I’m not a natural on camera. I stumble over my words. I don’t know what to say. I feel awkward just THINKING about it.
That’s part of what makes yapping work! Because perfection isn’t the goal. Connection is.
Your audience doesn’t need you to be a polished TV presenter. They need you to be YOU.
The messy, figuring-it-out, passionate about what you do, version of you.
That’s the version that captivates people. That’s also the version people buy from.
There was a lot of discourse online after Jessi got transparent about her launch revenue.
Some rooms were cheering for her, but a huge number of people responded with jealousy or frustration.
I get it. I really do. 💛
That scarcity mindset creeps in fast. It tells you there’s only room for one person to succeed and you’ve missed your shot. Or that other people winning so fast– faster than you– is “not fair”.
You wanna scream BUT WHY NOT ME!? And resent all the ‘hard work’ you’ve put in at your own craft.
But here’s what I need you to understand…
Her success is not a closed door. It’s a door being kicked WIDE open.
Think about it this way…
A RISING TIDE LIFTS ALL SHIPS.
When one person proves that something works, they’re essentially running the experiment FOR you. They’re showing you that this approach converts. That there’s real money to be made, in this case, by leveraging your personal brand to launch in-demand virtual products on Instagram.
I’ll even get vulnerable and tell you a reframe I talked myself through this weekend… I could have easily decided to believe that allll these people who bought from Jessi chose her instead of me…
Instead, I asked myself, “How can this provide an opportunity?”
I then remembered what makes me different from Jessi: I help businesses get CLIENTS from Instagram. Not just views and an audience.
Maybe all these people who get comfortable on camera after doing the Yap Challenge will have a follow up question: Now how do I sell?
And that’ll be the perfect opportunity for all of them to come work with me in Magic Marketing Machine!
Not to mention, content challenges like Jessi’s typically aren’t designed to give you a sustainable posting-pace. Maybe people will want to keep up their posting but do it faster, and more strategically once they finish her challenge. PERFECT! PUT ME IN, COACH! That’s exactly what I tell my clients how to do!
Is it really that “unrealistic” to believe these things instead of beating myself up about it? Nope. It’s a healthy abundance mindset.
Your audience is out there right now, scrolling, searching, waiting for someone who sounds like YOU. Who explains things the way YOU explain them. Who makes them feel seen the way YOU make people feel seen.
Jessi can’t serve everyone. Neither can I. Neither can any single creator.
So instead of looking at her launch and thinking it’s some sort of anomoly…
Look at her success as proof of concept. She showed you organic Instagram marketing works.
Now you get to drive it YOUR way, to YOUR people, with YOUR voice.
Ya know what is a good stepping stone to yapping on camera? Yapping in your Instagram Stories. They’re super low-pressure because they only last 24 hours, and they’re mostly seen by people who already follow (and love) you.
Want me to tell you what to post on your Stories for a week? Take Strategic Stories: The 5 Day Challenge. It’s just $10. And since my expertise is to get you CLIENTS… It’s framed around that, specifically.
